Safety Management Systems is a proactive approach to safety that was adopted by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) to ensure aerodrome readiness to comply withlocal civil aviation regulations.  The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has proposed that all US airports operating under 14 CFR Part 139 will be required to develop, implement, maintain and adhere to an airport Safety Management Systems (SMS). 

This course provides participants with the necessary knowledge and skills to plan, develop, and implement an SMS and explore the major components of the proposed FAA rule.

Learning Objectives

Upon completing this course, participants will be able to:

  • Describe both international and US specific regulatory frameworks relevant to airport safety.
  • Understand SMS rules and internal guidance that FAA has proposed to adopt.
  • Explain the key safety principles upon which to establish an effective SMS programme.
  • Describe the process to plan and implement an effective SMS.
  • Understand the basic safety processes of an SMS and how they identify hazards and mitigate risks
  • Expose the framework for creating a “safety culture” within an organization and learn to address related problems.
  • Describe the four components of an SMS required by the FAA proposed regulations including:
    • Safety Policy
    • Safety Risk Management
    • Safety Promotion
    • Safety Assurance
