Many users register domain names simply because they want to set-up a web site with a clear link to the aviation community. As awareness of the .aero suffix rises so does user habit - so searching for aviation websites becomes simpler - try typing "site:aero" into the google search box and see for yourself. .aero is more than just a top-level domain, it is also the development platform for innovative Internet-based services that use the well-established aviation naming and coding conventions. For example, there are number of business applications, such as facilitating interconnection of VoIP systems, interline e-ticketing, and RFID identifier processing, that could benefit from the combination of a predictable naming structure and the DNS technology that underpins .aero. With the evolution of online technologies the aviation industry, migration to Internet-based solutions is accelerating. Airlines find themselves with increasingly automated systems for ticketing, itinerary and passenger tracking and baggage processing. To be effective, all these systems must communicate with each other on a real time basis. "The idea behind .aero is to facilitate industry transition from a single centralized network to an Internet environment by developing a predictable naming structure for industry systems to communicate with each other" says Marie Zitkova, .aero Business Manager. The .aero naming structure is sponsored, operated and maintained by SITA on a not-for-profit basis. All its work is undertaken on behalf of the aviation community and benefits aviation at large.
