Brief

Successful guidance of airports in an ever dynamic environment requires the effective management of the uncertainties faced.  Enterprise Risk Management is a system of integrated processes and communication protocols that enables management to acknowledge and manage uncertainty in both the forms of risk and opportunity on a daily basis and as part of setting strategic direction in a balanced and systematic, but flexible manner.  A fully effective ERM program is not just a risk management process; it is a culture that focuses on risk/reward decision-making to position the organization to excel over the long-term.  Effective uncertainty management represents a collaborative effort across the entire organization, grounded in the foundation of the organization’s strategic plan, and integrates the multi-faceted critical focus areas of the organization and its stakeholders.

This course provides a forum for airport executives to gain a better understanding of best practices in uncertainty management.  As part of the week long course students will learn how to work with their leadership team and coworkers to identify and assess the critical risks and opportunities facing their airports, examine the root causes, and develop action plans through a strong platform of cross-functional collaboration. Students will also learn how to institute a risk/reward culture and communication strategies to use ERM as a decision-making framework that is strongly integrated with strategic planning, business and operational continuity, and safety management systems.

  • Establish an uncertainty awareness culture throughout the organization and integrate uncertainty management into strategic planning, major organizational initiatives, resource allocation systems, and organizational performance measurement and monitoring systems;
  • Implement best practices in developing action plans and adaptive decision making to optimize organizational performance in an uncertain environment
  • Document your airport’s uncertainty management approach in a written plan
  • Develop internal and external communication pieces and internal training packages
